Two Start Pitchers and schedules

from Eric Ferguson/sportingnews.com
Week Ahead
August 17, 2008
FAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Cubs hitters: With the Reds and Nats coming to town to visit the league's best offense, the scoreboard operators are going to get a workout.
Rangers hitters : It's a little-known fact Rangers Ballpark is actually a hitters paradise. OK, that's not true. It's a well-known fact. The Rangers get a week at home to add to their league-leading OPS and runs totals.
Diamondbacks pitchers: What do you get when two of the league's most strikeout-prone teams face off against one of the league's most strikeout-heavy pitching staffs? More strikeouts.

UNFAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Reds pitchers: They're nothing to brag about no matter what, but they're especially blech when they have to travel to Wrigley and Coors Field to face the league's top two home offenses.
Orioles pitchers: The O's rank 28th in home ERA, and they've got the Yankees and Red Sox coming to town. Pass.
A's hitters: They face four lefties this week. I'll give you one guess who ranks last in OPS against lefties. Yep, the Ballplayers Formerly Known as the Mack Men.

Fantasy Sports News

Need Help This Week
You Might Consider

CATCHER
Sleeper: Ramon Hernandez, Orioles. Ol' Razor Ramon has five multi-hit games this month and is sporting his best batting average of any of the three months thus far. All seven of Baltimore's games come at home (four vs. KC, three vs. TEX), where the Orioles have played so well. Give him a shot.

FIRST BASE/DH
Sleeper: Mike Jacobs, Marlins. He's basically Adam Dunn with fewer strikeouts and walks, and his schedule is awfully favorable for more home runs this week. Three home agames against Washington and four road games in Colorado. Those staffs rank 27th and 28th in ERA, respectively.

SECOND BASE
Sleeper: Rickie Weeks, Brewers. He's teasing us again, with three multihit games since his return from the DL last week, and very encouraging is the fact that Milwaukee faces five lefthanders this week. Weeks is hitting .262 against them -- 55 points better than his mark against righties.

THIRD BASE
Sleeper: Bill Hall, Brewers. Like teammate Weeks, Hall is much better against lefties. Five lefties on the schedule = great times.

SHORTSTOP
Sleeper: Jeff Keppinger, Reds. It's been an inauspicious return from the DL for Keppinger thus far, but he was perhaps the Reds' best hitter at the time of his injury on May 13. Add him in deeper leagues in which he was dropped.

OUTFIELD
Sleeper: Ben Francisco, Indians.. He's more than held his own primarily batting in the No. 3 hole for Cleveland, and three games apiece await at homer-friendly U.S. Cellular Field and the Metrodome. The Indians have a plenty of offensive energy pent up because they haven't done much in the past 10 days.

FAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Orioles hitters: Four against KC and three against Texas? Hooray responsibility!
Marlins hitters: It cannot get any better than series against the Nationals and in Colorado against the Rockies.
Mets hitters: The Mets' bats have awakened again, which makes series against the Cardinals' overachieving staff and the two of the Phillies' soft-tossers (Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick) look really good.

UNFAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Red Sox pitchers: Three games against the Rays in Tampa (who are 30-13 at home) and four games against the rival Yankees at Yankee Stadium will make it tough on everyone not named Josh Beckett.
Mariners hitters: Seattle is at home all week, but Roy Halladay, Dustin McGowan and Justin Verlander are among those who will be tough to handle.
Cubs pitchers: Seven road games await, and we all know how poorly the Cubs play away from Wrigley Field. Amazing how shaky the Cubs' rotation looks when Carlos Zambrano is taken out of the equation.

TWO-START PITCHERS

AL:
Brian Burres, Joba Chamberlain, John Danks, Scott Feldman, Gavin Floyd, Armando Galarraga, Jon Garland, Felix Hernandez*, Zack Greinke, Roy Halladay, Rich Harden, Luke Hochevar, Jesse Litsch*, Radhames Liz, Justin Masterson*, Mike Mussina, Glen Perkins, Nate Robertson, James Shields, Greg Smith, Jeremy Sowers, Tim Wakefield.

NL:
Collin Balester*, Dave Bush, Matt Cain, Aaron Cook, Doug Davis, Jorge De La Rosa, Zach Duke, Aaron Harang, Mark Hendrickson, Randy Johnson, Kyle Kendrick, Clayton Kershaw*, Ted Lilly, Greg Maddux, John Maine, Jason Marquis, Charlie Morton, Roy Oswalt, Tim Redding, Wandy Rodriguez, Eric Stults*, Jeff Suppan, Ryan Tucker, Edinson Volquez, Barry Zito.

The Week Ahead Who's Hot And Who's Not List

by Bill Bender

Here's a look at five key players from both teams who will make this interleague series worth watching.

That is, if you can pull yourself away from the Royals-Diamondbacks games:
Edinson Volquez, SP, Reds. The suddenly Cy Young candidate has passed every major test, but facing Boston is a little different than beating Cleveland's Cliff Lee in a battle of ERA leaders. Volquez is 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA at home, yet next Saturday's start still must be considered risky.
Jay Bruce, OF, Reds. The same rules apply here. He's 13-for-22 (.591) at home so far, but how will he hit a knuckle-baller like Tim Wakefield ? Or an elite pitcher like Josh Beckett? This is one of those "moments" in Bruce's young career. Expect him to pass the test.

Ken Griffey Jr., OF, Reds. It would be nice if Junior hit No. 600 already. This also could be an audition of sorts for Griffey should the Red Sox need a designated hitter in the future. Griffey still is useful in mixed leagues, but only coming off the bench

.
Josh Beckett, SP, Red Sox. He probably has heard the "Volquez dominates" talk, so Beckett does have something to prove against the Reds. Beckett is 0-2 with a 14.14 ERA in two career starts against Cincinnati, his worst ERA against any big league team. Just thought you should know.

Manny Ramirez, OF, Red Sox. Three days at the Great American Ball Park. Enough said. If you need more, try the fact Ramirez has seven homers and 17 RBIs in 14 career games against the Reds. Provided he doesn't take another swing at Kevin Youkilis or tweak his hamstring, it's going to be a big weekend.

A look at this week's sleepers and stumblers:

CATCHER
Sleeper: Brad Ausmus, Astros. Becomes an NL-only option with the demotion of J.R. Towles . Ausmus will at the very least produce some runs in Houston's lineup. It's better than nothing, which is what Towles was giving you. Stumbler: Yorvit Torrealba, Rockies. Torrealba likely will lose his appeal of a three-game suspension this week, which will render him virtually useless in your NL-only league.

FIRST BASE/DH
Sleeper: Aaron Boone, Nationals. Getting more at-bats in the cleanup spot, and he's hitting .333 against lefties this season. With four lefties on the schedule, you could do much worse in NL-only leagues. By worse, I mean ... Stumbler: Adam LaRoche, Pirates. Isn't driving in enough runs and his average is flirting with the sub-.200 mark. Not even a week of Nationals and Orioles pitching will fix that.

SECOND BASE
Sleeper: Jose Lopez, Mariners. Has a better batting average than Ichiro Suzuki . Lopez had five multi-hit games last week. Per John McLaren's colorful request, Lopez has "buckled it up." Stumbler: Mark Ellis, Athletics. His inability to hit lefties (.136-1-6) will be exposed this week. Three of Oakland's six games are against southpaws.

THIRD BASE
Sleeper: Scott Rolen, Blue Jays. A .400 hitter against the Mariners with solid career power numbers against Chicago (22 HRs, 78 RBIs in 122 games). Cubs fans will be screaming, "I thought we got rid of this joker!" Stumbler: Russell Branyan, Brewers. Yes, Branyan has been awesome, but he's still a .230 career hitter. There's a reason he has played for seven different teams since 1998. You can't trust him much longer.

SHORTSTOP
Sleeper: Michael Young, Rangers. Not even a hairline fracture on his ring finger can stop him. Young's hitting streak is at 22 games and counting. Just check your lineup to make sure he's not taking extra days off. Stumbler: Jhonny Peralta, Indians. Peralta has just one more hit (50) than he does strikeouts (49). If it seems like he's a .235 hitter, it's because he is.

OUTFIELD
Sleeper: Nick Markakis, Orioles. Markakis is hitting .349 against lefties with a .556 slugging percentage, and he's a .350 lifetime hitter in interleague play. How do you think he'll do against three lefthanded Pittsburgh pitchers? Stumbler: Nick Swisher, White Sox. Owning Swisher is enough of a problem. The fact Swisher is hitting just .205 with no homers and just one RBI against lefties is a bigger issue. Chicago faces four lefties this week. Don't make it a catastrophe.

STARTING PITCHER
Sleeper: Mike Mussina, Yankees. Somebody called me a nasty name after suggesting Mussina was a mixed-league find last week. Don't be surprised if Mussina is 11-4 after favorable matchups against the Royals and Astros. Call me what you will, but that is mixed-league material. Stumbler: Greg Maddux, Padres. Maddux has been great at home (1-0, 1.73), but the road is a different story (2-4, 5.01). Maddux is at Los Angeles first against 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw. Then he's at Cleveland for the first time since losing Game 5 of the 1995 World Series against Orel Hershiser, who led the Dodgers to the World Series in 1988, the year Kershaw was born. True or false: Awesome research?

RELIEF PITCHER
Sleeper: Salomon Torres, Brewers. Since a forgivable nightmare of a series against Boston, Torres hasn't allowed a run while converting five straight save opportunities. He'll get more chances against Houston and Minnesota. Stumbler: Rafael Soriano, Braves. The Braves are a terrible road team (7-21), and save opportunities will be limited for Soriano against the Cubs and Angels.

UNFAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Dodgers: Three at Petco Park before three against the Tigers at Comerica Park is not a good mix. Kershaw will have some kind of week. He faces Maddux on Monday before taking on the Tigers on Saturday. Astros: The Astros already give up the most homers in baseball, and the Brewers and Yankees are coming to town. Prince Fielder, in particular, loves Minute Maid Park (.318-5-12 in 20 games). Royals: After finishing off a four-gamer with the Yankees on Monday, the Royals head back home for three with the Rangers. Then it's off to Arizona for the weekend.

FAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Cardinals: Despite a beat-up rotation, the Cards avoid interleague play and are home all week. They won't face Cincinnati's Aaron Harang or Edinson Volquez , and they'll miss Philly's Cole Hamels, too. Tigers: The White Sox are hitting .229 as a team against lefties, so Nate Robertson and Kenny Rogers stand a chance. The Dodgers will be making the flight in from San Diego before the weekend series. It adds up. Blue Jays: Toronto is home all week, with the Mariners and Cubs coming to town. The Cubs have a 13-16 road record and .254 average on the road. Toronto has a 3.31 team ERA at home.

TWO-START PITCHERS

AL: Scott Baker, Josh Beckett, Erik Bedard, Daniel Cabrera, Jose Contreras, John Danks, Dana Eveland*, Armando Galarraga, Luke Hochevar, Edwin Jackson, Cliff Lee, Jesse Litsch, Gil Meche, Kevin Millwood, Mike Mussina, Glen Perkins, Nate Robertson*, C.C. Sabathia, Joe Saunders, Carlos Silva*, Chien-Ming Wang.

NL: Homer Bailey, Matt Cain, Tyler Clippard, Aaron Cook, Zach Duke, Tom Glavine, Mark Hendrickson, Randy Johnson, Clayton Kershaw, John Lannan, Ted Lilly, Greg Maddux, Paul Maholm, John Maine, Seth McClung*, Pat Misch*, Brett Myers, Ricky Nolasco, Roy Oswalt, Micah Owings, Edinson Volquez.

Ahead this Week

Week Ahead: Dare to stream May 18, 2008
By George Winkler

It's time to go streaming. We're not talking about fantasy bass fishing, either, though I hear there's a niche market for that type of advice. No, we're here to discuss the well-known practice of shuffling fringe pitchers in and out of your fantasy lineups on a per-matchup basis.
Why would you do such a thing? Well, the waiver wire in some leagues, i.e. my league, is picked clean of reliable options or pitchers who might turn into such. So, while it's a gamble to look at fringe pitchers, streaming doesn't entail a long-term commitment. It's like how some Hollywood types might approach marriage, only with streaming you don't have to sign a prenuptial agreement.
I'm considering streaming for two reasons. No. 1, I'm far beneath the innings limit in one of my leagues and feel like I have some innings to play with. No. 2, I'm waiting for injured starters like Pedro Martinez to return or ineffective pitchers like Rich Hill to get their acts together. If I can hit on a few calculated risks in the meantime, I think I can weather the storm.
Here's a look at some of the pitchers you could "go streaming" with this week:
Jon Lester, Red Sox. Since a bad start on April 23 against the Angels, Lester has lowered his ERA from 5.40 to 3.95. He has a two-start week against the Royals and A's and might be available in some mixed leagues.
Bronson Arroyo, Reds. This Guitar Hero is always dicey, but he has allowed just one run in his past two starts (15 innings). He has a two-start week at the Dodgers and Padres, which are favorable pitching venues.
Nick Blackburn, Twins. He has had some growing pains, but overall has been good. He's coming off a quality start at Coors Field and faces the Rangers in Minnesota this week.
Braden Looper, Cardinals. A trip to PETCO Park usually is agreeable to pitchers. Looper might be available in your mixed league after coming down to earth a bit (two straight losses) following a hot start.
Carlos Villanueva, Brewers. I wouldn't touch him for today's start at Boston. But later in the week, the Brewers are at Washington, and he's scheduled to go.
Scott Feldman, Rangers. Feldman is limited to the AL-only crowd, but he is a two-start pitcher this week with road matchups against Minnesota and Cleveland. He's coming off three straight quality starts.
CATCHER
Sleeper: Jason Varitek, Red Sox. Varitek has 62 hits in 59 career games against the Royals, including 10 home runs. Kansas City comes to Boston for four games before Boston hits the road for three in Oakland. Stumbler: A.J. Pierzynski, White Sox. Put it on the board, ye ... not this week. Pierzynski has the fourth lowest batting average against lefties among active catchers. Lefties C.C. Sabathia and Aaron Laffey are on the White Sox's schedule, as well as tough righties Ervin Santana and John Lackey.

FIRST BASE/DH
Sleeper: Kevin Millar, Orioles. Millar has a career average of .294 against the Yankees and .312 against the Rays, and Baltimore is on the road to face both teams this week. Millar is hitting a not-too-shabby .288 for his career at Yankee Stadium.Stumbler: Nick Swisher, White Sox. Swisher has one home run in his last 19 games and is batting just .208. It has gotten so bad with Swish that manager Ozzie Guillen gave him a day off Sunday just to clear the cobwebs. Will the rest work? Don't count on it. Swisher is hitting just .212 in his career against the Angels, one of Chicago's opponents this week.

SECOND BASE
Sleeper: Luis Castillo, Mets. Now that Castillo is back from a quad injury, he can finally go to work in May, which is his best month for batting average (.324). He also has a history of success against the Braves (.288) and Rockies (.305), the Mets' opponents this week.Stumbler: Erick Aybar, Angels. In 13 career games against the White Sox, he has a .194 batting average. OK, so that's a small sample size, but Aybar has been worse on the road historically and is coming down from a hot start when his average peaked at .356 on April 22.

THIRD BASE
Sleeper: Akinori Iwamura, Rays. Iwamura has had six multi-hit performances in his past eight games. During this span, his batting average has climbed from .227 to .271. Will three lefties on the Rays' schedule this week slow down the lefty-swinging Iwamura? Not according to his lifetime splits (.309 vs. lefties).Stumbler: Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks. Reynolds has one home run since April 25, and his average has sunk into the .220s after being as high as .344. His career splits show he is worse on the road and before the All-Star break. Arizona is at Florida and Atlanta this week -- and, yes, it's still not mid-July, though it probably felt that way in parts of the Western U.S this past weekend.

SHORTSTOP
Sleeper: Orlando Cabrera, White Sox. Last season's .301 batting average was a career high for Cabrera. While we didn't expect him to repeat that, we didn't think he'd be hitting in the low .200s, either. This is a gut feeling, but a matchup later this week with his former team, the Angels, could get him going.Stumbler: Cristian Guzman, Nationals. A career .264 hitter can't keep hanging around .300 like Guzman is doing these days. This is the reverse gut feeling I had with Cabrera -- in other words, either I just got skinnier or added some junk to my backside.

OUTFIELD
Sleeper: Ben Francisco, Indians. Francisco hit his first home run on Saturday against the Reds and is batting .375 since his call-up on May 6. He's young and unproven, but go ahead and ride the hot hand while he has it -- this is especially true for those of you in AL-only leagues.Stumbler: Juan Pierre, Dodgers. In 58 career games against the Cardinals, Pierre has been successful on only four of eight stolen-base attempts. One reason is Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who leads the majors over the past four seasons in percentage of attempted basestealers thrown out. Los Angles plays St. Louis and Cincinnati this week.

STARTING PITCHER
Sleeper: Mike Mussina, Yankees. All the talk in preseason was about the youngsters on the Yankees staff, but it has been the old guy who has gotten the job done. Mussina gets the Orioles and Mariners this week, and both teams are in the bottom one-third in the majors in batting average.Stumbler: Andrew Miller, Marlins. He has been up and down, so it was no surprise to see him struggle against the Royals after dominating the Nationals. Arizona brings a lot more firepower than those two teams, so once again it's not Miller time this week.

RELIEF PITCHER
Sleeper: Troy Percival, Rays. Is it time to sell high? You bet. But not before you get another solid week out of Percival as Tampa Bay takes on Baltimore and Oakland.Stumbler: C.J. Wilson, Rangers. Manager Ron Washington said Wilson was still the team's closer even after Eddie Guardado got a save last week. That's known in the biz as the dreaded "vote of confidence," and usually it's followed up by a change.

FAVORABLE SCHEDULES
Red Sox pitchers: Kansas City is near the bottom in the majors in runs scored, and the A's are in the same boat when it comes to home runs. Plus, Boston has seven games this week, giving Jonathan Papelbon extra chances for appearances.Brewers hitters: Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Co. get to face the Pirates and Nationals, two of the majors' worst teams in staff ERA.Twins hitters: The Rangers and Tigers are bottom-feeders in team ERA, and Minnesota gets seven games against them. Justin Morneau has hit well versus both teams, too.
UNFAVORABLE SCHEDULES

Cardinals hitters: A trip to the West Coast includes unfavorable parks (PETCO Park, Dodger Stadium) and matchups with top-of-rotation pitchers (Jake Peavy, Greg Maddux, Chris Young, Brad Penny -- if healthy -- Derek Lowe and Chad Billingsley).Mariners pitchers: The Tigers and Yankees haven't hit full stride yet, but their lineups are still formidable-looking. Plus, Seattle will be on the road for all six games.Royals hitters: Despite having seven games this week, Kansas City has a tough road trip. The Blue Jays are among the majors' leaders in staff ERA, and the Red Sox will throw Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka at the Royals in a four-game set at Fenway.

TWO-START PITCHERS

AL: Josh Beckett, Joe Blanton, Boof Bonser, Paul Byrd*, Daniel Cabrera*, Jose Contreras, Scott Feldman, Roy Halladay*, Luke Hochevar, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Gil Meche, Mike Mussina, Glen Perkins, James Shields, Carlos Silva*, Justin Verlander.

NL: Bronson Arroyo, Matt Belisle, Chad Billingsley*, Jorge De La Rosa, Tom Glavine, Cole Hamels, Mark Hendrickson, Ted Lilly, Greg Maddux, Paul Maholm, Patrick Misch, Brian Moehler*, Brett Myers, Micah Owings, Manny Parra, Brad Penny*, Tim Redding, Chris Sampson, Claudio Vargas, Todd Wellemeyer.
