DL watch Crawford out may need surgery

DL watch Crawford out may need surgery
from CBSSports.com
posted by Tabloid Paige

Crawford could be out for year

The St. Pete Times reports that Rays OF Carl Crawford has tendon subluxation in his wrist, a problem with the tendon being out of its normal groove. He is likely out at least 6-8 weeks and could require season-ending surgery.

While Crawford hasn't done much for Fantasy owners this season, they would surely rather have him in their lineup than be on the DL and trying to scramble to fill his spot with someone else especially in AL only leagues. When healthy, he's a must start in all leagues that reward stolen bases, but it doesn't look like he'll be doing that any time soon. Hold onto him in deeper mixed and AL formats for now, but don't be surprised if he's no use to you the rest of the way.

Players going on and coming off the DL

Players going on and coming off the DL
orginial post by sportingnews.com
Mon 08/11/2008

NL Pitchers:
Chris Carpenter - SP, St. Louis Cardinals Aug. 11, 1:36 a.m.

Chris Carpenter indicated after Sunday's game that he's aiming to throw on the side Tuesday and make his next start.
Fantasy Source spin: Carpenter allowed two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings before leaving his start against the Cubs with a triceps strain.
Next start: 8/10: @CHC

Aaron Harang - SP, Cincinnati Reds Aug. 10, 5:07 p.m.

Aaron Harang got knocked around in his return from the disabled list on Sunday, allowing eight earned runs over just four innings.
Fantasy Source spin: The Reds will be blamed for rushing Harang back after this drubbing. Edinson Volquez was ready to go on five days of rest and Harang had just one rehab start under his belt. Whatever. The fact is, he looked horrible. The eight earned runs he allowed set a career high as he fell to 3-12 on the season. He'll bring a 5.17 ERA into his next start against the Cardinals.

Brad Lidge - RP, Philadelphia Phillies Aug. 10, 3:36 p.m.

Brad Lidge admitted Sunday that his throwing shoulder has been feeling sluggish.
Fantasy Source spin: Lidge won't be available for Sunday's game. He apparently developed a mechanical flaw over the past few weeks which is causing some irregular fatigue. "You want to make sure you can nip it in the bud and get through it and come back really strong," he said. He should be ready to go on Monday.
Source: Phillies.mlb.com

Scott Olsen - SP, Florida Marlins Aug. 10, 2:12 p.m.

Scott Olsen rolled his ankle trying to cover first base on Saturday, but fully expects to make his next scheduled start.
Fantasy Source spin: Olsen is probably dealing with a swollen ankle this morning, but it should be fine by Thursday when he's slated to go against the Cardinals. "In talking with the training staff, they seem to think he's going to be OK," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We'll know more the closer we get to that date."

Next start: 8/14: STL

Tom Glavine - SP, Atlanta Braves Aug. 10, 9:59 a.m.

Tom Glavine allowed four runs -- three earned -- over five innings Saturday for Double-A Mississippi.
Fantasy Source spin: Though it didn't go all that well, it was Glavine's final rehab start and he felt confident with the results. "I felt good, and just like my last time out, I felt better about my mechanics as the game went on," he said. He is scheduled to start Thursday against the Cubs.
Source: Braves.mlb.com

Scott Proctor - RP, Los Angeles Dodgers Aug. 10, 9:43 a.m.

Scott Proctor is expected to resume throwing on Monday.
Fantasy Source spin: Proctor was shut down last Saturday when he complained of discomfort after a rough two-thirds of an inning for Single-A Inland Empire. He's a couple of weeks from returning to the Dodgers.
Source: Los Angeles Times

Billy Wagner - RP, New York Mets Aug. 10, 9:19 a.m.

Billy Wagner played long-toss and threw several pitches on flat ground Saturday.
Fantasy Source spin: It was the first time Wagner had touched a baseball since he landed on the disabled list with a forearm strain last week. Wagner said he felt "all right." He is hoping to return when eligible on August 18.
Source: New York Daily News

NL Hitters:
Ryan Church - OF, New York Mets Aug. 10, 9:15 a.m.

According to the New York Daily News, Ryan Church "boomed shots over the outfield wall" during an impressive batting practice session on Saturday.
Fantasy Source spin: Church is on his way to Florida to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Port St. Lucie. He is hoping to return during the Mets' next home stand on August 19.
Source: New York Daily News

Orlando Hudson - 2B, Arizona Diamondbacks Aug. 10, 12:31 a.m.

Orlando Hudson could miss the rest of the year with a dislocated left wrist suffered Saturday against the Braves.
Fantasy Source spin: It'd be a major blow to Arizona's hopes. "(It's) not great, dislocation, fracture of a bone in his wrist, and we're not 100 percent sure whether he has to have surgery," manager Bob Melvin said. "Probably a pretty good chance, but we will know in the morning. If he has the surgery, he's out for the rest of the year, and if he doesn't, there's still a chance he could be out for the rest of the year." The Diamondbacks figure to make Augie Ojeda their primary second baseman, with Chris Burke backing him up. They could also attempt to trade for someone who has cleared waivers. Brian Roberts and Mark Ellis probably wouldn't, but lesser options like Tadahito Iguchi, Ronnie Belliard and Mark Loretta could be available.

Jerry Hairston Jr. - SS, Cincinnati Reds Aug. 10, 10:25 a.m.

Jerry Hairston Jr. was held out of Saturday's lineup as he's still bothered by a hamstring injury.
Fantasy Source spin: "He's better today," Dusty Baker said after Saturday's game. "We just deal with it. We're not quite there. We're hoping he'll be ready in Pittsburgh."
Source: Cincinnati Enquirer

Carlos Lee - OF, Houston Astros Aug. 10, 12:56 p.m.

Astros placed outfielder Carlos Lee on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left pinkie finger.
Fantasy Source spin: Even if he misses the rest of the year, which is rather likely, Lee has already turned in a fourth straight 100-RBI season. It looked like he was going to smash his career high of 119 established last year.

Ryan Braun - OF, Milwaukee Brewers Aug. 10, 11:13 a.m.

Ryan Braun is out of Sunday's lineup after exiting Saturday's game with lower back tightness.
Fantasy Source spin: The severity of Braun's injury is still unknown. For now, he's considered day-to-day. Gabe Kapler replaced him in the left field.

Todd Helton - 1B, Colorado Rockies Aug. 10, 5:52 p.m.

Rockies transferred Todd Helton to the 60-day disabled list on Sunday.
Fantasy Source spin: Helton has been out since July 3 and had a setback two weeks ago when his back began acting up during a round of soft-toss. There's a chance he won't see the field again this season.

AL Pitchers:
Bartolo Colon - SP, Boston Red Sox Aug. 10, 5:56 p.m.

Bartolo Colon pitched three shutout innings Sunday in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Fantasy Source spin: Colon allowed three hits, but didn't walk a batter and struck out three. 27 of his 34 pitches went for strikes. He'll have to build up his pitch count with several more rehab starts, but today's results are definitely encouraging.

Jose Contreras - SP, Chicago White Sox Aug. 10, 12:51 p.m.

White Sox placed RHP Jose Contreras on the 15-day disabled list with a rupturned Achilles' tendon.
Fantasy Source spin: Contreras is scheduled for season-ending surgery, and it's very much an unknown whether he'll be back to contribute in the last year of his contract in 2009. The White Sox figure to seek a veteran to replace him.
Next start: 8/14: KC

Tim Wakefield - SP, Boston Red Sox Aug. 10, 12:28 p.m.

Tim Wakefield will go on the disabled list before Sunday's game because of stiffness in his right shoulder.
Fantasy Source spin: Wakefield was scheduled to pitch next on Tuesday. His replacement should be announced soon.
Next start: 8/15: TOR

Todd Jones - RP, Detroit Tigers Aug. 10, 10:29 a.m.

Todd Jones (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session on Monday.
Fantasy Source spin: Jones is hoping to be activated Friday, the first day he's eligible. "We'll play it by ear and see what he looks like (Monday)," manager Jim Leyland said.
Source: Detroit News

AL Hitters:
Rocco Baldelli - OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays Aug. 10, 7:33 p.m.

Rocco Baldelli had an RBI single in four at-bats Sunday in his season debut against the Mariners.
Fantasy Source spin: Baldelli was put right into the cleanup spot in his first major league game since May 2007. He came out of the rout after playing six innings in right field.

Shawn Riggans - C, Tampa Bay Devil Rays Aug. 10, 7:32 p.m.

Shawn Riggans returned to action on Sunday and hit a three-run homer against the Mariners.
Fantasy Source spin: Riggans was hurt when he was hit in the chest a week ago. The homer today was his fifth of the year. He has 20 RBIs in just 95 at-bats this season.

Brandon Boggs - OF, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 6:23 p.m.

Forced to enter Sunday's game after Milton Bradley left, Brandon Boggs went 0-for-2 with two walks.
Fantasy Source spin: Boggs was supposed to get another day off because of a sore shoulder, but he was able to DH. It's throwing that's more of a problem for him right now. He remains day-to-day.

Scott Rolen - 3B, Toronto Blue Jays Aug. 10, 6:16 p.m.

The Blue Jays said after Sunday's game that they're placing Scott Rolen on the DL and bringing back Kevin Mench.
Fantasy Source spin: Rolen will rest his troublesome shoulder for two or three weeks before rejoining Toronto's lineup. Joe Inglett figures to get most of the playing time at third base. Marco Scutaro could also see some starts there.

Torii Hunter - OF, Los Angeles Angels Aug. 10, 5:47 p.m.

Torii Hunter was relegated to DH duty on Sunday after tweaking his right ankle in the eighth inning of Saturday's game.
Fantasy Source spin: "I woke up this morning and it was fine," Hunter said. "I'm feeling good, but I figure if I go out there and run on it and something happens, I could be out for weeks but I promise you there's no pain." Gary Matthews Jr. is playing center field.
Source: Angels.mlb.com

Jed Lowrie - SS, Boston Red Sox Aug. 10, 5:18 p.m.

Jed Lowrie was able to enter Sunday's game as a pinch-hitter for Alex Cora and went 0-for-2.
Fantasy Source spin: Lowrie didn't start because of a bruised foot, but he's expected to be fine.

Willie Bloomquist - OF, Seattle Mariners Aug. 10, 4:49 p.m.

Mariners placed infielder Willie Bloomquist on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
Fantasy Source spin: Bloomquist's season could be over after he was injured last night. The free-agent-to-be was hitting .279/.377/.285 with 14 steals in 165 at-bats. Despite the extreme lack of power, it qualifies as a career-best season for a guy who entered with a .313 career OBP.

Scott Rolen - 3B, Toronto Blue Jays Aug. 10, 4:13 p.m.

Scott Rolen was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup because of continued soreness in his left shoulder.
Fantasy Source spin: Marco Scutaro took over at third base. Rolen has missed five of 11 games and could be headed for a stint on the DL if the shoulder keeps bothering him.

Milton Bradley - DH, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 4:03 p.m.

The Rangers said Milton Bradley left Sunday's game with a stomach virus, not because of his strained quad.
Fantasy Source spin: Maybe he did. However, the Rangers also said Hank Blalock had an upset stomach one day before they put him on the DL with a sore shoulder. We'll see how this one turns out.
Source: Dallas Morning News

Jeff Mathis - C, Los Angeles Angels Aug. 10, 3:01 p.m.

Jeff Mathis was held out of Sunday's starting lineup because of an irritated right eye.
Fantasy Source spin: Mike Napoli is starting a second straight game with Mathis sidelined.
Source: Orange County Register

Jed Lowrie - SS, Boston Red Sox Aug. 10, 2:56 p.m.

Jed Lowrie didn't start Sunday after fouling a pitch off his left foot on Saturday.
Fantasy Source spin: Lowrie is likely to be back on Monday. Alex Cora started at shortstop Sunday.
Source: Boston.com

Milton Bradley - DH, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 2:55 p.m.

Milton Bradley lasted just two at-bats before coming out of Sunday's game against the Orioles.
Fantasy Source spin: Bradley struck out in the first, walked in the second and then was removed when he was due up in the fourth. It looks like the Rangers made a mistake in letting him rush his return from a strained quad.

Juan Castro - SS, Baltimore Orioles Aug. 10, 2:49 p.m.

Juan Castro was held out of the lineup Sunday after leaving Saturday night's game in the seventh inning with a mild groin strain.
Fantasy Source spin: Manager Dave Trembley said Castro should "be OK to play tomorrow." Alex Cintron got the start at short.
Source: Orioles.mlb.com

Carl Crawford - OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays Aug. 10, 2:09 p.m.

Rays placed outfielder Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with a right hand injury.
Fantasy Source spin: Crawford said he felt a pop in his hand during his final at-bat of Saturday's game. If he has ligament damage, then he could miss at least a month and possibly the rest of the season. Right now, he's optimistic that he'll be back when his 15 days are up. Gabe Gross will be a regular outfielder for now. Rocco Baldelli was activated in Crawford's place and will also see considerable playing time.

Rocco Baldelli - OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays Aug. 10, 2:07 p.m.

Rays activated outfielder Rocco Baldelli from the 15-day disabled list.
Fantasy Source spin: With Carl Crawford out, Baldelli figures to get as much playing time as he can handle for at least the next two weeks. That makes him worth using in AL-only leagues.

Marcus Thames - OF, Detroit Tigers Aug. 10, 1:16 p.m.

Marcus Thames was scratched from Sunday's lineup with a sore right shoulder.
Fantasy Source spin: Brandon Inge was inserted as the third baseman, with Ryan Raburn moving to left. Thames is day-to-day.
Source: Booth Newspapers

Carlos Guillen - 3B, Detroit Tigers Aug. 10, 1:14 p.m.

Carlos Guillen is expected back in the starting lineup for Monday's game.
Fantasy Source spin: Guillen is out of the lineup for a second straight game on Sunday because of back spasms.
Source: Booth Newspapers

Milton Bradley - DH, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 1:14 p.m.

Milton Bradley is back in the starting lineup for the first time this month on Sunday.
Fantasy Source spin: Bradley wasn't expected back from his strained quad until Tuesday, but he said he was ready to DH today.

Kevin Youkilis - 1B, Boston Red Sox Aug. 10, 12:33 p.m.

Kevin Youkilis was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup because of soreness in his left shoulder.
Fantasy Source spin: Sean Casey replaced him in the field. J.D. Drew will bat cleanup. Consider Youkilis day-to-day.

Vernon Wells - OF, Toronto Blue Jays Aug. 10, 12:04 p.m.

Blue Jays activated outfielder Vernon Wells from the 15-day disabled list.
Fantasy Source spin: Wells has been out since July 10 with a strained left hamstring. He had a .287/.329/.449 line with nine home runs and 42 RBI before getting hurt.

Joey Gathright - OF, Kansas City Royals Aug. 10, 10:34 a.m.

Joey Gathright (shoulder) went 0-for-5 Saturday in a rehab game for Triple-A Nashville.
Fantasy Source spin: It was Gathright's first rehab game. He'll play a few more before the Royals make a roster move.
Source: Kansas City Star

Hank Blalock - 3B, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 9:56 a.m.

Hank Blalock (shoulder) played catch Saturday for the first time since landing on the disabled list July 28.
Fantasy Source spin: Blalock will take ground balls Tuesday in front of manager Ron Washington and others. If that goes well, he'll begin a rehab assignment soon after.
Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Brandon Boggs - OF, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 9:53 a.m.

Brandon Boggs (shoulder) was held out of the lineup Saturday because manager Ron Washington didn't want him to make throws from the outfield.
Fantasy Source spin: Boggs was apparently injured last week on a slide into second base. Consider him day-to-day.
Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Milton Bradley - DH, Texas Rangers Aug. 10, 9:51 a.m.

Milton Bradley (quadriceps) took batting practice Saturday and could return to the lineup on Tuesday.
Fantasy Source spin: Bradley has now been dealing with this injury for two weeks. He'll likely DH for the rest of the season once he returns.

Asdrubal Cabrera - 2B, Cleveland Indians Aug. 10, 5:45 a.m.

Asdrubal Cabrera returned to action on Saturday.

Joba Heads to DL Chris Britton Called Up

Joba Chamberlain is headed to the disabled list.

Joba Heads to DL Chris Britton Called Up.

The YankeesNew York Yankees put the right-hander on the 15-day DL with an injured shoulder before tonight's game against Texas while awaiting word on a diagnosis from Dr. James Andrews.

The Yankees recalled pitcher Chris Britton from Triple-A, despite the fact he was sent down less than 10 days ago.

A player cannot be recalled after a demotion before 10 days have passed, unless his team needs him to replace an injured player.

Chamberlain is in Pensacola, Fla., today having his right shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews, is bound for the DL.

A diagnosis from Andrews likely would determine how much time the 22-year-old would miss, and if surgery is required.

Britton pitched three innings for the Yankees on July 31 and was sent down to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the next day, Aug. 1.

He likely would pitch out of the bullpen, which means the Yankees would need to make another recall to take Chamberlain's spot in the rotation. Ian Kennedy is the likely choice.

Chamberlain was removed after 4 2/3 innings of Monday's game in Texas. After that game, Joe Girardi said he thought Chamberlain might miss one start, but did not think the injury was serious based on how the righty had maintained his velocity.

Chamberlain was dispatched to New York on Tuesday to undergo an MRI exam. The result showed a significant enough problem for the Yankees to send Chamberlain and the MRI results to Pensacola to see Andrews. It was an ominous sign considering teams usually send players to Andrews for second opinions only when they have a concern from their initial diagnosis.

The loss of Chamberlain for any length is a blow because he was emerging as a top-of-the-rotation force. He was 4-3 with a 2.63 ERA. Even with his poor outing Monday, Chamberlain was 3-1 in 12 starts with a 2.76 ERA.

Braves Pitcher Tim Hudson Season Over

Braves Pitcher Tim Hudson Season Over
MRI reveals bad news for No. 1 starter

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An MRI done Monday afternoon showed damage in the ulnar collateral ligament area of the elbow, though Hudson and Wren said it wasn't known if he has a torn ligament that would require season-ending "Tommy John" ligament-transplant surgery.
"That's the obvious procedure that's going to fix any kind of ligament damage," Hudson said. "I don't know how severe it is, if rehab [alone] might fix it."
Hudson will meet Wednesday with Braves orthopedist Xavier Duralde, who's out of town until Tuesday night. Then the pitcher will travel to Birmingham to see famed orthopedic surgeon James Andrews.

After Monday's game, Hudson still seemed to be in almost a state of disbelief over the news.

"I was floored," he said. "I thought they were almost kidding with me. ... It feels fine, that's what's frustrating. Nothing really hurts."

Hudson said he got the test done only because he was going to be on the disabled list for 15 days anyway, and the Braves figured he might as well get the sophisticated dye-injection form of MRI.

"I'm starting to wonder if it's been like this for three or four years, and is just something I learned to deal with," said Hudson, who left his Wednesday start at Florida after six scoreless innings when tightness in his right forearm moved toward his elbow.

The 33-year-old didn't think it was anything serious, though he still had some minor discomfort when he threw Sunday at Philadelphia.

Braves manager Bobby Cox said Hudson was placed on the DL earlier Monday for precautionary reasons, indicating there was no reason to risk further injury when the Braves had fallen so far back in the standings. But that was before the Braves saw MRI results from the 4 p.m. exam.

Hudson is 11-7 with a 3.17 ERA in a staff-leading 142 innings, and has a 146-77 career record in 10 seasons with Oakland and Atlanta.

The Alabama native is in the third year of a four-year, $47-million contract extension he signed after being traded from Oakland following the 2004 season. He is scheduled to make $13 million in 2009, with a $12 million option for 2010 that's mutual and includes a $1 million buyout.

Wren said he was told by doctors that the MRI revealed what was believed to be some old and some recent damage in the elbow. He said there had not been warning signs before Wednesday's start.

"I think everybody was a little surprised there was something [injured in the elbow]," Wren said.

Hudson is the fourth member of the Braves' season-opening rotation to land on the DL, after John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton. Rookie Jair Jurrjens missed a start with a sprained ankle.

Smoltz had season-ending shoulder surgery, and Glavine is trying to come back from a partially torn flexor tendon near his pitching elbow.

"We've had more than our share [of injuries], that's for sure," said Wren forced a smile and added, "Could throw a yellow flag for piling on."

Chipper Jones returns to DL

Reyes demoted to make room for Morton, Sammons

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/28/08

On a day in which Chipper Jones and Tim Hudson were placed on the disabled list, struggling pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes was optioned to Class AAA Richmond and the Braves added pitcher Charlie Morton and catcher Clint Sammons from Richmond. They also activated pitcher Jeff Bennett from the DL.

While the possible severity of Hudson's ulnar-collateral ligament injury was surprising, placing Jones on the 15-day DL for the first time this season wasn't. The major-league hitting leader's left hamstring hadn't improved since he pulled it Wednesday and he'll probably need most of two weeks to recover anyway.

The Braves wanted to DL a position player to open a spot for Sammons, since they needed another catcher for a few days while Brian McCann recovers from the concussion sustained Sunday in a home-plate collision with the Phillies' Shane Victorino.

Jorge Campillo will replace Hudson for Tuesday's game, Jair Jurrjens is scheduled to start Wednesday and Mike Hampton is set for his second start in Thursday's series finale. Braves manager Bobby Cox said he didn't know who'd pitch Friday's series opener against Milwaukee.

Jones rues inability to help vs. Phillies

The Braves blew six- and five-run leads in weekend defeats at Philadelphia, and Jones regretted that he wasn't on the field to do anything about it.

"It's disappointing because I felt I could've helped us this last series, maybe pushed us over the top in a game we lost," said Jones, who's still hitting .369, but was 9-for-39 (.231) in his last 12 games while playing with a lingering right quadriceps injury.

"My goal in spring training was to go through the season without anything keeping me out for any extended period of time," he said. "Unfortunately, I've had leg problems last couple of months.

"The team is better off with me on the DL right now, to give Bobby a full deck when he's trying to manage a game. It just makes sense to give itthe full 15 days to heal, and let the quad on the other leg heal."

The Braves played Monday without Jones and McCann, who ranked second and sixth in the NL in on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). Mark Kotsay, with four homers and 27 RBIs, hit cleanup Monday.

"It's been that kind of year," Jones said. "We can't sustain the injuries we've sustained to key people and expect to stay competitive, at or near the top of the division. It's impossible, especially when you're replacing guys like myself, Smoltz, Glavine, [Rafael] Soriano and [Peter] Moylan with minor-league guys."

Barring something entirely unexpected, the Braves will miss the postseason for the third consecutive year since their run of 14 consecutive division titles.

"I feel like for the last couple of years, even though we haven't gone to the playoffs, we've been within earshot of the rest of the division," Jones said. "Now, because of the injury situation, because of the trade deadline coming up and all of the rumors floating around here, we're already pointing to next year.

"...We're going to work hard and continue to compete. But there's three teams in front of us in the division. The likelihood of all three of them collapsing is not probable."

Posada Return Possible?

Posada Return Possible?
updated 12:30 pm EDT
Posada might return after the 15 days on the DL. Thats if his shoulder feels better.

Yankees' Posada won't go for surgery yet
BY KEN DAVIDOFF | ken.davidoff@newsday.com
11:34 AM EDT, July 23, 2008

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada will try to return to the lineup if his shoulder feels better when his stint on the disabled list is over.

Jorge Posada will postpone the inevitable surgery on his right shoulder, Joe Girardi said Wednesday.

The Yankees catcher, who has a torn labrum and rotator cuff damage, will likely take the entirety of his 15 days on the disabled list to see if he can strengthen his shoulder and consequently help the team as a designated hitter and first baseman. The injury has considerably diminished Posada's arm strength this season.

The team placed Posada on the disabled list this past Monday. He'd be eligible to play again on August 5.

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report
posted by TabloidPaige.com

Jul 13 2008 - DH David Ortiz is moving closer to a return to the Red Sox lineup. Big Papi is scheduled to embark on a six-game rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) and Double-A Portland (ME.) after the All-Star break. If Ortiz's troublesome left wrist passes through the minor league action without any setbacks, the designated hitter should be cleared to return to the Sox fold against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on July 25. "I feel great. I've had so many surgeries already. I don't want no more. It's good to know that I'm going to be able to play without surgery," said Ortiz.

Jul 13 2008 - B Kevin Youkilis left Sunday afternoon's game in the fifth inning with a left triceps contusion after getting hit in the arm with a pitch. The injury isn't expected to be serious and X-Rays taken at the park were negative, so Youkilis' status as the starting first baseman for the AL All-Star team shouldn't be affected. SS Jed Lowrie entered the game as an injury replacement for Youkilis and played in the remainder of Sunday afternoon's game. "He's fine," said Sox Manager Terry Francona. "He just got hit in the funny bone."

Jul 14 2008 - RHP Rafael Soriano (right elbow tendinitis) began a rehab assignment July 12 with the Braves' Dominican Summer League's team in San Francisco de Macoris. Soriano threw nine pitches and had one strikeout in his one-inning appearance.
Jul 14 2008 - LF Alfonso Soriano probably won't come off the DL until July 24, when the Cubs return from a six-game road trip after the All-Star break. Soriano broke a bone in his left hand June 11. The Cubs had hoped he could return right after the break, but the hand has felt "weak," and Soriano may do a minor-league rehab stint.
Spin: He could be back in 1 week.

Jerry Hairston Jr.
Day-To-Day
July 16 2008 Hairston was diagnosed with a mild strain in his right hamstring after undergoing an MRI on Monday, the Sporting News reports.

Jul 14 2008 - RF Ryan Church said he expects to play sooner rather than later after an exam in the Cleveland Clinic determined his headaches were migraines rather than symptoms from his two concussions. Endy Chavez and Fernando Tatis have played in right with Church on the disabled list. Church hopes to be ready to play when he's eligible to come off the disabled list, July 21. "He'll get some at-bats before he rejoins us," manager Jerry Manuel said. "Every day there's a period of evaluation."

Player Watch On the mend: Francisco Liriano; Assistant general manager Rob Antony said Wednesday that the Twins will discuss the possibility of pitching Liriano out of the bullpen.

David Ortiz - DH, Boston Red Sox
Jul. 7, 7:06 p.m.
David Ortiz took batting practice Monday for the first time since injuring his wrist on May 31. Fantasy Source spin: Both Ortiz and manager Terry Francona reported afterward that the BP session went well, but there's still no timetable for Ortiz's return.
Source: MLB.com

John Buck - C, Kansas City Royals
Jul. 7, 4:55 p.m.
John Buck hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th to lead the Royals over the Rays on Monday afternoon. Fantasy Source spin: Last time we checked in with Buck he was passing blood after getting hit in the cup with a foul tip. It was a much better day today as he also singled and scored, finishing 2-for-5. His three-run blast off Dan Wheeler was followed by a solo shot from Mike Aviles to put the Royals up four.

Mike Napoli - C, Los Angeles Angels
Jul. 7, 4:13 p.m.
Angels placed catcher Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Fantasy Source spin: Napoli started 43 of the Angels' first 88 games, but Jeff Mathis will now play nearly every day behind the plate, with Ryan Budde backing him up. Napoli hit .204/.308/.472 with 12 homers and 29 RBI in 169 plate appearances.

Hideki Matsui - DH, New York Yankees
Jul. 7, 10:00 a.m.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that playing the outfield would not be part of Hideki Matsui's rehab work. Fantasy Source spin: This likely means that the Yankees are only considering a return to the DH spot for Matsui if he does make it back this season. Team trainers say that he's "showing some improvement," but there's still no timetable for a possible return. Source: New York Daily News

Pitchers
Erik Bedard - SP, Seattle Mariners
Jul. 7, 9:19 p.m.
According to the Seattle Times, Erik Bedard could start Saturday or Sunday "depending on how his shoulder feels." Fantasy Source spin: With Felix Hernandez set to come off the disabled list Friday, the Mariners could use Ryan Rowland-Smith to sub for Bedard if needed. Manager Jim Riggleman said Monday that the Mariners may decide to shut Bedard down through the All-Star break.

Felix Hernandez - SP, Seattle Mariners
Jul. 7, 9:15 p.m.
Felix Hernandez (ankle) is scheduled to come off the disabled list to start Friday versus the Royals. Fantasy Source spin: King Felix has been sidelined since June 23 after injuring his ankle while covering home plate. He's returning to face the punchless Royals in a favorable first matchup, so Hernandez should be activated in all leagues.

Adam Loewen - SP, Baltimore Orioles
Jul. 7, 7:19 p.m.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Adam Loewen (elbow) is "a slam dunk" to land on the disabled list. Fantasy Source spin: Loewen underwent a CT scan Monday, but the results haven't been made public yet. He left Sunday's game after complaining of a sharp pain in his left elbow.
Source: Baltimore Sun

Dontrelle Willis - SP, Detroit Tigers
Jul. 7, 2:51 p.m.
The Tigers said Monday that Dontrelle Willis will fly to Detroit to have his right knee examined by the team doctor. Fantasy Source spin: It's the same knee that he hyperextended in April and caused him to go on the 15-day disabled list. He hasn't pitched since a June 29 outing for Single-A, and it's unclear just how long the knee has been bothering him.

Curt Schilling - SP, Boston Red Sox
Jul. 7, 1:09 p.m.Curt Schilling (shoulder surgery) said Monday that he hasn't decided whether to try to play baseball again. Fantasy Source spin: He said Monday that he's started to rehab his shoulder, but that it will be at least five weeks before he must decide whether to try to return for 2009. Schilling's arm was in a sling and he said it was more sore than he expected it to be.
Source: Boston Globe

Kevin Millwood - SP, Texas Rangers
Jul. 7, 5:59 a.m.Kevin Millwood returned to action on Sunday July 6. Next start: 7/11: CHW
Felix Hernandez - SP, Seattle Mariners
Jul. 7, 12:12 a.m.Felix Hernandez (ankle) threw his first full bullpen session since going on the disabled list on Sunday. Fantasy Source spin: He'll throw another one on Tuesday, and if all goes well he could return to the starting rotation on Thursday.
Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Bobby Jenks - RP, Chicago White Sox
Jul. 7, 12:06 a.m.Bobby Jenks (back) might not be available to pitch for the White Sox before the All-Star break Fantasy Source spin: Jenks continues to be bothered by soreness in his back, and he played long toss on Sunday, but he still hasn't thrown a side session since first reporting the pain. The Sox will likely decide what to do with him before their series in Kansas City starts on Tuesday. They could put him on the DL retroactive to June 30, which would mean he'd be eligible to join the team after the All-Star break.

King Felix Slams, Leaves
06/24/2008
BY Aaron Gleeman

What happens when an ambidextrous pitcher faces a switch-hitting batter? Mostly there's a lot of confusion, followed by some gamesmanship, a little frustration, a few on-field meetings, and then finally . well, I won't ruin it for you. Check out this highly amusing eight-minute clip of a low Single-A game last week and see for yourself. Trust me, it's worth watching. While Pat Venditte immediately becomes one of my favorite pitching prospects, here are some notes from around baseball .* Monday's matchup of Venezuelan aces Johan Santana and Felix Hernandez predictably proved to be an interesting one, but hardly went as expected. King Felix made history in the second inning by taking Santana deep to the opposite field for the first grand slam by an AL pitcher in 37 years. After giving himself an early lead Hernandez cruised through 4.2 dominant innings before injuring his ankle when Carlos Beltran slid into him during a play at the plate following a wild pitch. Hernandez was in obvious pain and could barely put weight on the ankle, yet attempted to remain in the game and even tried to talk his way into a second warm-up pitch after hopping around for several moments following his first throw. Clearly in no position to pitch, he finally relented and was carried off the field, visibly upset about coming one out short of his fifth straight win. X-rays were negative and Hernandez said afterward that he expects to make his next scheduled start.

While the Mariners hope that Hernandez can avoid the sidelines, manager Jim Riggleman said Sunday that J.J. Putz is unlikely to make it back from his elbow injury before the All-Star break. "We don't want to rush it," Riggleman said. "It seems like with those elbows a guy says, 'I'm over it' and then he gets in the adrenalin of a game situation and it flares up again." Putz being out for the remainder of the first half would give Brandon Morrow at least three weeks with closer duties.Of course, Morrow needs to get over health problems of his own first. He hasn't pitched since June 17 because of back spasms, but had what the Mariners deemed an "extensive" throwing session prior to Monday's game and is expected to be available Tuesday. Morrow was among the most unhittable relievers in baseball prior to the back problems, tossing 20 innings with a 0.90 ERA, 30-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and .164 opponent's batting average. He can do the job.

Injuries and poor run support kept Ben Sheets from winning more than a dozen games in any of his first seven seasons, but he's avoided his usual assortment of arm problems so far this year and looks capable of approaching 12 wins by the All-Star break. Sheets improved to 9-1 with a complete-game victory Monday, retiring the last 16 batters he faced while holding the Braves to one run on four hits. Sheets totaled seven strikeouts without issuing a free pass, giving him an excellent 84-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio to go along with a 2.59 ERA over 104.1 innings. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since May 15 and leads the league with three complete games, the latest of which required just 106 pitches. He has a favorable schedule leading into the break, with a road start against the Twins followed by home starts against the Pirates and Rockies.

After posting a career-best 3.07 ERA last season and moving from the spacious foul territory in Oakland to the hitter-friendly environment in Arizona during the winter, Dan Haren struck me as a good candidate to decline in 2008. Instead, he's been better than ever in his first season with the Diamondbacks, shutting out the Red Sox for seven innings Monday to defeat Josh Beckett and improve to 8-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

AL Quick Hits:

Kevin Youkilis left Monday's game in the fifth inning when a Mike Lowell warm-up throw took an odd bounce and hit him in the eye . Justin Verlander had double-digit strikeouts Sunday for the first time in 20 starts and has lowered his ERA from 6.43 to 4.49 over the past eight outings . John Lackey held the punchless Nationals to one run over eight innings Monday, improving to 5-1 while slicing his ERA to 1.65 . Josh Beckett was a tough-luck loser Monday, falling to 7-5 despite racking up eight strikeouts over eight innings of two-run ball . According to manager Joe Girardi, the Yankees may call up Sidney Ponson from Triple-A to start in Friday's doubleheader . Orioles president Andy MacPhail said Sunday that the team will continue to look for an upgrade at shortstop after handing Alex Cintron the job .

Curt Schilling underwent surgery Monday to repair his labrum and biceps, but no major damage was found in his rotator cuff and pitching again hasn't been ruled out.

NL Quick Hits:

Mark Mulder (shoulder) was scratched from his scheduled minor-league rehab start Monday because of back soreness and may not be readyy to rejoin the Cardinals' rotation as planned next week . Eric Byrnes came off the disabled list Monday after sitting out 25 games with matching hamstring tears and slid into the leadoff spot . Manager Jerry Manuel expressed doubt Sunday that Moises Alou (calf) will be able to play again this season, suggesting that he may "head to the house" and retire rather than struggle through more injuries . Matt Holliday went 2-for-3 with a homer Monday, going deep for the first time since coming off the shelf . John Lannan left Sunday's start after being hit on the wrist by a line drive, but a CT scan Monday revealed no major damage . Mike Cameron returned to the lineup Monday after sitting out four games with a hyperextended knee and smacked a two-run homer . Making little progress on his rehab stint, Matt Clement (shoulder) has shifted to the bullpen at Triple-A . Nationals top prospect Chris Marrero will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his fibula last week.

Clement: Take Two - 06/18/2008

BY Aaron Gleeman

Reyes tweaks hamstring, hopes to play Weds.

Dodgers'KurodatoundergoMRIonshoulder

Red Sox place Colon on DL with stiff back

Konerko placed on DL with oblique strain

Mets fire Randolph, Peterson

Mariners adding Clement, demoting Balentien

Ichiro plays right for first time since 2006

Moving Ichiro Suzuki back to right field in order to get Willie Bloomquist's horrible bat into the lineup is a mistake, but the Mariners made a good decision Tuesday in the wake of firing general manager Bill Bavasi by recalling Jeff Clement from Triple-A. He got all of 56 plate appearances to prove himself last time and struggled, but hit .287 with nine homers, nine doubles, 23 RBIs, and a .670 slugging percentage in 24 games at Tacoma following his demotion. Clement didn't start Tuesday because the Mariners were facing a left-hander and clearly needed Jose Vidro to go 0-for-5 while dropping his OPS to .578, but should see the bulk of the action at designated hitter against right-handers. He has a strong all-around offensive game that includes 25-homer power and could emerge with mixed-league value wherever he's eligible at catcher. For now, count on him being an asset in AL-only leagues if the Mariners show some patience. While the Mariners hopefully allow Clement more than 15 games to sink or swim this time, here are some other notes from around baseball .

Brandon Webb was pulled from his start last Wednesday after just five innings and 58 pitches amid concerns about decreased velocity, saying afterward that he may be going through a "dead arm" period. If that outing caused worry among his fantasy owners, Tuesday's start against the A's may cause something a little closer to panic. Webb allowed seven runs without making it out of the fourth inning, once again showing diminished velocity and shaky command.Webb served up multiple homers for the first time in 39 starts and walked five batters for the first time in 31 starts. Since beginning the season 9-0 with a 2.56 ERA, Webb has gone 2-3 with a 4.54 ERA. That's hardly disastrous, of course, but something clearly isn't right with him right now. He's scheduled to face the Twins in Minnesota on Sunday, but pushing him back wouldn't be such a bad thing given his recent struggles and 5.11 career ERA on turf.

Tuesday was rough on the Dodgers' rotation, as Brad Penny landed on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis and Hiroki Kuroda was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday with shoulder soreness of his own. An MRI on Penny's shoulder revealed no structural damage and for now the injury is expected to sideline him for just 2-3 starts, but returning after the minimum 15 days on the DL is far from a sure thing given that he's been complaining of soreness all month. Kuroda is scheduled to undergo an MRI instead of pitching Wednesday, at which point the team should have a better handle on his status. Derek Lowe will take his place, with recent call-up Eric Stults taking the mound Thursday and Clayton Kershaw getting the call Friday. Saturday's start may go to either Chan Ho Park or Hong-Chih Kuo unless the Dodgers want to call up another prospect. Stults has minimal fantasy potential, but the injuries give Kershaw more job security.

Bartolo Colon surprised everyone by looking like his old self through five starts for the Red Sox, going 4-1 with a 3.41 ERA. Unfortunately, Colon struggled in his sixth outing Monday and was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with back soreness. He apparently tweaked his back while taking a big cut at the plate, meaning that like Chien-Ming Wang he's sidelined thanks to interleague play. Unlike Wang, he's not expected to miss a huge chunk of time. In fact, Colon indicated Tuesday that he may have been able to avoid the DL altogether, but the Red Sox understandably chose to play it safe. Colon's injury means that Justin Masterson will now remain in the majors once Daisuke Matsuzaka returns from the DL this weekend, giving the Daily Dose favorite at least a couple more starts to impress. Masterson is 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA through five starts and has induced a grounder on an outstanding 54 percent of his balls in play.

AL Hits:

Closing with J.J. Putz (elbow) sidelined, Brandon Morrow slammed the door on a one-run lead Tuesday to give Felix Hernandez his fourth straight win . Jon Lester tossed seven shutout innings Tuesday, allowing three or fewer earned runs for the 10th straight start . Milton Bradley is considered day-to-day after leaving Tuesday's game with a strained quadriceps, but given his injury history some time off should be expected . Jason Giambi homered twice Tuesday and is now sporting a ridiculous .376/.485/.788 line since mid-May . Livan Hernandez came into Tuesday's game 0-3 with a 9.38 ERA and .438 opponent's batting average over his last six starts, but held the Nationals to one run over seven innings . Scott Kazmir was on track for his eighth streight Quality Start before being pulled from Tuesday's game in the fifth inning due to a high pitch count . Mike Aviles smacked a game-winning solo homer Tuesday and now has nine extra-base hits in a dozen games . Mark Ellis reached base five times Tuesday, homering twice and scoring four runs . Edgar Renteria collected his 2,000th career hit Tuesday and is still nearly two months shy of his 33rd birthday.

NL Hits:

Jose Reyes is considered day-to-day after leaving Tuesday's game with a strained hamstring . Much to Bill Hall's chagrin, Russell Branyan homered Tuesday for th! e eighth time in 18 games . Chase Headley made his season debut Tuesday, starting in left field and batting sixth while going 2-for-4 with two strikeouts . Manager Joe Torre said Tuesday that he doesn't expect Rafael Furcal (back) to return before the All-Star break, clearing the path for Nomar Garciaparra to see time at shortstop soon . Chris Carpenter (elbow) was cleared to resume throwing after Dr. James Andrews found no structural damage during an exam Monday . Ryan Braun went deep twice Tuesday, giving him 15 homers over the past 34 games after homering a total of five times through his first 35 games . John Lannan tossed seven innings of two-run ball Tuesday against the Twins, but took the loss as the Nationals failed to give him more than two runs of support for the sixth straight start . Manny Parra allowed a career-high 10 hits in his last start, but bounced back Tuesday with seven shutout innings against the Blue Jays.

Player Watch Update

Grady Sizemore - OF, Cleveland Indians
Jun. 14, 1:25 a.m.Grady Sizemore hit a pair of homers as the Indians defeated the Padres 9-5 on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: Sizemore took Josh Banks and Mike Adams deep tonight. He has four homers in three games and he's hit in 10 straight, so he's really stepping up as is necessary with both Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner on the shelf.

Kelly Shoppach - C, Cleveland Indians
Jun. 14, 1:23 a.m.Kelly Shoppach had a two-run homer, two walks and three runs scored Friday against the Padres. Fantasy Source spin: Shoppach should be pretty valuable while Victor Martinez is out. He has three homers in his last four games, and he has 11 homers in 247 at-bats since the beginning of 2007.

Garret Anderson - OF, Los Angeles Angels
Jun. 14, 12:32 a.m.Garret Anderson returned to action on Friday and went 1-for-3 against the Braves. Fantasy Source spin: Anderson was the DH tonight. He didn't play Wednesday because of a sore right knee.

Juan Uribe - 2B, Chicago White Sox
Jun. 13, 11:42 p.m.Finally making his first start since coming off the DL on May 31, Juan Uribe had a two-run single to help the White Sox beat the Rockies 5-4 on Saturday. Fantasy Source spin: Alexei Ramirez had the night off. As well as Ramirez is swinging, it seems unlikely that Uribe's big hit tonight will get him any additional time at second base this weekend. Perhaps he could be used at shortstop to give Orlando Cabrera a day off.

Jason Kubel - DH, Minnesota Twins
Jun. 13, 11:31 p.m.Jason Kubel went 2-for-5 and hit his third homer in five games Friday against the Brewers. Fantasy Source spin: Kubel has six homers in the five games. That he's heating up could give the Twins a bit of a dilemma for the rest of their games in NL parks. Even if Michael Cuddyer (hand) can play on Saturday, the Twins might still be better off with either he or Delmon Young on the bench to keep a spot open for Kubel.

Manny Ramirez - OF, Boston Red Sox
Jun. 13, 11:08 p.m.The Red Sox said Manny Ramirez's hamstring was bothering him during Friday's game before he came out. Fantasy Source spin: "We talked about it before the game and then he said he was really feeling it, so we took him out," manager Terry Francona said. "And that certainly makes it hard, because it certainly limits you when the game starts, but you don't want to hurt him worse than he is." Ramirez is expected to sit out Saturday's game. Either Coco Crisp or Brandon Moss will start.Source: RedSox.mlb.com

Magglio Ordonez - OF, Detroit Tigers
Jun. 13, 11:04 p.m.Magglio Ordonez homered as part of a 2-for-4, two RBI night Friday in a win over the Dodgers. Fantasy Source spin: Marcus Thames also homered in the game. The blast was Ordonez's tenth this season and the two RBI move his total to 42. He's currently hitting .311 with 36 runs.

Matt Stairs - DH, Toronto Blue Jays
Jun. 13, 10:54 p.m.Matt Stairs, batting second, connected for a two-run homer in the third inning Friday that led the Blue Jays over the Cubs. Fantasy Source spin: Scott Rolen also homered in the inning, and those three runs held up. Stairs is hitting .261 this year with 25 RBI and now eight total homers.

Eric Hinske - OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Jun. 13, 10:39 p.m.Eric Hinske drove in two runs Friday and finished 2-for-3 as the Rays topped the Marlins. Fantasy Source spin: Dioner Navarro added a two-run double, while Akinori Iwamura, Gabe Gross, and Jason Bartlett drove in a run apiece. Hinske improves his average to .250. He has 33 RBI and 23 runs scored this season.

Frank Thomas - DH, Oakland Athletics
Jun. 13, 10:31 p.m.Not having made as much progress with his strained quad tendon as expected, Frank Thomas has been told not to participate in any baseball activities until July 1. Fantasy Source spin: The hope was that he'd return next Friday after the A's were finished playing in NL parks, but that won't happen now. As a result, both Daric Barton and Jack Hannahan will keep their jobs. One could be dropped from the roster after Thomas returns.

Kevin Millar - 1B, Baltimore Orioles
Jun. 13, 10:26 p.m.Kevin Millar, in the lineup after leaving Thursday's game early, drew three walks and managed to rack up two RBI Friday as the Orioles beat the Pirates. Fantasy Source spin: Seven of the Orioles' starters had at least one hit. Luke Scott contributed a homer, while Ramon Hernandez, Aubrey Huff and Brian Roberts drove in runs. Millar is hitting .251 with 36 RBI this season.

Michael Cuddyer - OF, Minnesota Twins
Jun. 13, 9:23 p.m.Michael Cuddyer left Friday's game in the first inning with a bruised right hand. Fantasy Source spin: X-rays were negative after Cuddyer was hit by a David Bush pitch. Delmon Young, who was supposed to get a rare day off, replaced Cuddyer in the game against the Brewers.

Hank Blalock - 3B, Texas Rangers
Jun. 13, 7:51 p.m.Hank Blalock (carpal tunnel syndrome) will begin a rehab assignment Monday and hopes to be activated before next weekend. Fantasy Source spin: Blalock took two rounds of batting practice Friday for the first time since undergoing wrist surgery at the end of May. "My hand feels a little weak for not having heat in so long but I'll get as many repetitions this weekend as I can and go from there," he said. He'll start his rehab Monday at Triple-A Oklahoma, but should be in the minors for only three or four games. The Rangers still plan to start him at first base once he returns.Source: Rangers.mlb.com

Manny Ramirez - OF, Boston Red Sox
Jun. 13, 6:37 p.m.Manny Ramirez is making his first start in left field in 11 days against the Reds on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: He can't DH in a National League park. Ramirez has been bothered by a strained right hamstring, and there's a good chance he would have missed at least a few games if not for David Ortiz's absence opening up the DH spot.

Ryan Sweeney - OF, Oakland Athletics
Jun. 13, 6:02 p.m.Athletics activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the 15-day disabled list. Fantasy Source spin: Sweeney should reclaim his job as the center fielder against right-handers. Carlos Gonzalez will move to right field, though he could continue to play center against some lefties. That would put Emil Brown in right.

Travis Buck - OF, Oakland Athletics
Jun. 13, 6:01 p.m.Athletics optioned outfielder Travis Buck to Triple-A Sacramento. Fantasy Source spin: Buck and Carlos Gonzalez had essentially produced at the same rate since they were recalled on the same day, though they went about it differently (Gonzalez had the better average by 90 points; Buck had a 3-0 lead in homers and a 7-1 edge in walks). As similar as they were, we figured Buck would be the one to stay. However, the A's will keep Gonzalez for now and shift him over to right field. Expect him to play pretty regularly there.

Carl Crawford - OF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Jun. 13, 5:03 p.m.Carl Crawford will begin serving his four-game suspension with Friday's game against the Marlins. Fantasy Source spin: He might need a break anyway, as he's been playing for weeks like he's banged up. Crawford's absence finally gets Cliff Floyd back into the lineup tonight. He will DH, with Eric Hinske playing left field and Willy Aybar at first base.Source: St. Petersburg Times

Sean Casey - 1B, Boston Red Sox
Jun. 13, 5:00 p.m.Sean Casey appealed his three-game suspension which was due to begin on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: Casey's suspension was supposed to start the game after Coco Crisp's ended. That's the way MLB does it, even though it knows 95 percent of the players are going to appeal anyway.Source: RedSox.mlb.com

Alberto Gonzalez - 3B, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 2:54 p.m.The Yankees recalled Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Fantasy Source spin: The Yankees weren't using Shelley Duncan's bat, so they decided to fill his roster spot with someone who at least offers some defensive versatility. Barring an injury, Gonzalez figures to see little action.

Shelley Duncan - 1B, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 2:52 p.m.The Yankees optioned Shelley Duncan to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Fantasy Source spin: Duncan is 10-for-57 (.175) on the season and had just one at-bat since May 30, thanks in part to the Yankees facing only one lefthander over the past 13 games.

Chone Figgins - 3B, Los Angeles Angels
Jun. 13, 12:10 p.m.The Angels activated Chone Figgins from the disabled list. Fantasy Source spin: Figgins' made it through just one game before heading back to the disabled list last time, but he'll slide right into the starting lineup. He is a safe fantasy play after going 2-for-10 during a minor league rehab assignment.

Travis Hafner - DH, Cleveland Indians
Jun. 13, 9:26 a.m.Travis Hafner might not be fully recovered when the Indians bring him back in the coming weeks. Fantasy Source spin: The team's head trainer said it would be "hard to speculate" if Hafner will be 100 percent. And manager Eric Wedge says "it's just a question of what percentage he can give us." Hafner's ailing shoulder has been used as an excuse for his struggles thus far this season, and while it might be improved when he returns, it doesn't seem it will be healed.Source: Akron Beacon Journal

Luke Scott - OF, Baltimore Orioles
Jun. 13, 9:04 a.m.Orioles manager Dave Trembley indicated Thursday that he plans on starting Luke Scott more often against lefthanded pitchers. Fantasy Source spin: In 146 career at-bats against southpaws, Scott has a .240 average with four home runs. Fantasy leaguers might do well to continue to selectively use him as a fourth outfielder, especially against tougher lefties, until he shows that he can handle them. He has a .297 average with 10 homers in in 158 at-bats against righties this season.Source: Baltimore Sun

Billy Butler - DH, Kansas City Royals
Jun. 13, 4:09 a.m.Billy Butler homered, doubled and walked Thursday for Triple-A Omaha. Fantasy Source spin: With Butler tearing it up since being optioned out and Ross Gload still doing nothing to justify his existance, the Royals need to be seriously thinking about giving the 22-year-old another chance. He's hitting .377/.441/.679 with three homers and just two strikeouts in 53 at-bats.

Hideki Matsui - DH, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 12:56 a.m.Playing on his 34th birthday, Hideki Matsui hit his fifth major league grand slam to give the Yankees all of their runs in a 4-1 win over the A's on Thursday night. Fantasy Source spin: Matsui's seventh homer in the year followed an infield single and two walks that Joe Blanton was quite unhappy about. He had been without an extra-base hit in 33 at-bats this month.

Robinson Cano - 2B, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 12:50 a.m.Robinson Cano went hitless on Thursday to finish 0-for-12 in the series against the A's. Fantasy Source spin: Cano hit .295 in May, but he's at .224 with just one RBI through 49 at-bats in June. While it was mid-July last year before he went on his tear to finish with strong numbers, he was better than this during the first 2 1/2 months. The Yankees need more from him.Pitchers

R.A. Dickey - RP, Seattle Mariners
Jun. 14, 1:16 a.m.R.A. Dickey, who was moved into the rotation as a temporary replacement for Miguel Batista, was lit up by the Nationals on Friday, surrendering seven runs in 1 2/3 innings. Fantasy Source spin: Dickey has been terrific in relief, but he's been roughed up in both of his starts for the Mariners this season. If he's not better next time out, there's a good chance that he'll find himself right back in the bullpen.

Greg Smith - SP, Oakland Athletics
Jun. 14, 1:12 a.m.Greg Smith allowed one run over five innings Friday in a defeat of the Athletics. Fantasy Source spin: Smith overcame six walks, something he probably wouldn't have been able to do versus an American League club. The win was just his second in his last nine starts. If he doesn't impress over the next couple of weeks, he might cease being worth using in AL-only leagues once the A's resume facing AL teams.Next start: 6/13: @SF

Zack Greinke - SP, Kansas City Royals
Jun. 14, 12:44 a.m.Despite issuing seven walks, Zack Greinke shut out the Diamondbacks for seven innings on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: One of the walks was intentional. Greinke allowed just three hits, all of which were singles, so the Diamondbacks never could score. Since he didn't have many long at-bats outside of the walks, he threw only 111 pitches in the contest.Next start: 6/13: @ARI

Gavin Floyd - SP, Chicago White Sox
Jun. 13, 11:41 p.m.Gavin Floyd allowed four runs -- all coming on solo homers -- in 6 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Rockies. Fantasy Source spin: As a flyball pitcher, Floyd is going to have nights like this. He gave up Ian Stewart's third and fourth career homers tonight, as well as the first hit by Willy Taveras since last June 16. Brad Hawpe hit the fourth and final homer. They were the only hits Floyd allowed.Next start: 6/13: COL

Kevin Slowey - SP, Minnesota Twins
Jun. 13, 11:33 p.m.Kevin Slowey allowed two runs in eight innings and had a two-run single in the Twins' 10-2 win over the Brewers on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: Slowey was shelled by the White Sox last time out, so he still has a 4.70 ERA for the season. However, he's allowed three runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts. Mixed leaguers should strongly consider him with the Nationals and Padres next on the schedule.Next start: 6/13: @MIL

Joba Chamberlain - RP, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 11:20 p.m.Joba Chamberlain lasted six innings in his third major league start and held the Astros to one run in a game the Yankees would win 2-1. Fantasy Source spin: Derek Jeter's homer in the eighth was the difference. Shawn Chacon also pitched one-run ball for 6 1/3 innings, so Chamberlain is still looking for his first victory as a starter. He walked four and struck out just two tonight, but all six hits he allowed were singles.

Kyle Farnsworth - RP, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 11:18 p.m.With Mariano Rivera needing a day off, Kyle Farnsworth got a save chance in a 2-1 game against the Astros on Friday and pitched a scoreless ninth. Fantasy Source spin: They just don't get any more reliable. Farnsworth hit Ty Wigginton to start the inning, but that didn't stop the Astros from having Michael Bourn try to bunt. A popup followed, and the only reason it wasn't a double play -- Bourn made no attempt to run out of the box -- was that Farnsworth was too dense to drop the ball. After that, Wigginton, a noted speed demon who swiped seven bases just four years ago, was thrown out trying to steal second. Reggie Abercrombie, who is in MLB only because of his legs, remained in the dugout throughout. Geoff Blum then fanned to end the game. It was Farnsworth's first save since 2006 and the 52nd time Cecil Cooper was outmanaged this season.

Armando Galarraga - SP, Detroit Tigers
Jun. 13, 11:08 p.m.Armando Galarraga pitched seven innings of shutout ball Friday as the Tigers blanked the Dodgers 5-0. Fantasy Source spin: Galarraga moves to 6-2 on the year. The Dodgers managed only three hits as Galarraga walked only one and fanned five. He's definitely worth a shot in AL-only leagues and some deep mixed leagues, especially now that he has some job security resulting from Jeremy Bonderman's injury. There's no reason to think he won't pitch well against the Giants next week.Next start: 6/13: LAD

A.J. Burnett - SP, Toronto Blue Jays
Jun. 13, 10:58 p.m.A.J. Burnett held the Cubs to four hits and two earned runs over five innings Friday as the Blue Jays beat the Cubs 3-2. Fantasy Source spin: Burnett wasn't great. He walked four batters, but made a big stride from his horrible performance last week. He did manage seven strikeouts however and lowered his season ERA to 4.90. Burnett could move above .500 with a win over the Brewers next week.Next start: 6/13: CHC

Andy Sonnanstine - SP, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Jun. 13, 10:49 p.m.Andy Sonnanstine moved to 7-3 Friday night, but allowed three earned runs over 5 1/3 innings to the Marlins. Fantasy Source spin: Sonnanstine pitched a little better than those numbers sound. He had a rough first inning, but retired 12 batters in a row between the second and fifth. He didn't walk a man and struck out six. He'll meet the Cubs next.Next start: 6/13: FLA

Brian Burres - SP, Baltimore Orioles
Jun. 13, 10:34 p.m.Brian Burres allowed six earned runs in six innings Friday to the Pirates, but the offense carried him to a win. Fantasy Source spin: Burres let up eight hits and walked three. His control was off, but after a rough third inning he didn't allow a run. The bullpen was perfect through the end of the game when George Sherrill picked up his 22nd save. Burres now carries a 5.28 record and probably doesn't deserve a spot in the Orioles' rotation. If he gets another start, it'll be against the Astros.Next start: 6/13: PIT

Scott Feldman - SP, Texas Rangers
Jun. 13, 10:12 p.m.Scott Feldman got lit up Friday by the Mets, allowing seven runs -- six earned -- over five innings. Fantasy Source spin: The Mets managed eight hits off Feldman, who also walked two. He struck out just one batter, and moves to 1-3 on the year. He's up against the Braves next week, though he shouldn't be considered as a spot starter by even the most desperate of fantasy leaguers.Next start: 6/18: ATL

Justin Masterson - SP, Boston Red Sox
Jun. 13, 9:42 p.m.Justin Masterson struck out nine, but allowed three earned runs in a loss to the Reds Friday night. Fantasy Source spin: Masterson let up only four hits, but walked three and served up homers to Jay Bruce and Adam Dunn. Masterson falls to 3-1, but those strikeouts and his 2.90 ERA are plenty of reason to get AL-only leaguers excited. He'll have a tough test against the Phillies next week, but he's definitely worth owning.Next start: 6/13: @CIN

Jeremy Accardo - RP, Toronto Blue Jays
Jun. 13, 8:47 p.m.Jeremy Accardo's ailing forearm flared up Thursday during a rehab appearance. He'll be out several days. Fantasy Source spin: Accardo has been on the disabled list since May 10 with a right forearm strain. He had yielded one run on three hits in two innings for Single-A Dunedin, but might need to start his rehab from scratch after this incident.Source: BlueJays.mlb.com

Juan Rincon - RP, Minnesota Twins
Jun. 13, 8:41 p.m.Juan Rincon has rejected his assignment to Triple-A Rochester. Fantasy Source spin: The Twins now have 10 days to trade or release the struggling reliever. His career stats should lead to some offers, but there's a good chance he ends up just getting released. Rincon had a 2.93 ERA from 2003-2006, but has definitely been a bit off recently. He had a 6.11 ERA in 28 innings this season. "I've got to go do something, find another team to make it back to the big leagues," he said.

Joaquin Benoit - RP, Texas Rangers
Jun. 13, 7:30 p.m.The Rangers are considering placing Joaquin Benoit on the disabled list to make room for Saturday's starter Kason Gabbard. Fantasy Source spin: The Rangers would probably prefer to throw Robinson Tejada and his 13.50 ERA on the DL, but Benoit has been complaining of shoulder pain this week and hasn't pitched since last weekend. Benoit has allowed six runs in his last three appearances, so some extended rest might be good for everyone. "He hasn't been what he was last year and we'd like to get him back to where he's normal again," said pitching coach Mark Connor. The move will be made early Saturday.Source: Rangers.mlb.com

Al Reyes - RP, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Jun. 13, 6:50 p.m.Rays placed RHP Al Reyes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 10, with right shoulder tendinitis. Fantasy Source spin: Reyes has been battling his shoulder all year, and this is his second DL stint. He has a 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.

Troy Percival - RP, Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Jun. 13, 6:50 p.m.Rays activated RHP Troy Percival from the 15-day disabled list. Fantasy Source spin: Percival will resume closing right away, putting Dan Wheeler back into a setup role.

Jordan Tata - SP, Detroit Tigers
Jun. 13, 6:41 p.m.Tigers sent RHP Jordan Tata outright to Single-A Lakeland. Fantasy Source spin: Tata isn't hopeless, but since he has been awful in the Florida State League of late, there was little chance of him getting claimed. A smart move by the Tigers to free up a spot on the 40-man.

Daisuke Matsuzaka - SP, Boston Red Sox
Jun. 13, 5:49 p.m.Daisuke Matsuzaka is expected to make a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday and rejoin the Red Sox five days later. Fantasy Source spin: That means Justin Masterson should make two more starts, including tonight's, before returning to the minors. Dice-K has been out since May 27 with a strained shoulder.

Esteban Loaiza - RP, Chicago White Sox
Jun. 13, 4:58 p.m.White Sox placed RHP Esteban Loaiza on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 12, with a right shoulder inflammation. Fantasy Source spin: Instead of being released, Loaiza heads back to the DL with a supposed injury. The White Sox probably won't consider bringing him back until after he makes a few rehab starts.

J.J. Putz - RP, Seattle Mariners
Jun. 13, 3:03 p.m.The Mariners placed J.J. Putz on the disabled list, retroactive to June 12, with a hyperextended right elbow. Fantasy Source spin: Manager John McLaren initially expressed optimism that Putz would avoid the DL, but he'll now miss at least two weeks after leaving his Wednesday appearance in obvious discomfort. Brandon Morrow takes over as the Mariners' closer and gains a ton of fantasy value after dominating in 22 outings as a setup man.

Roy Corcoran - RP, Seattle Mariners
Jun. 13, 3:00 p.m.The Mariners recalled Roy Corcoran from Triple-A Tacoma. Fantasy Source spin: Corcoran replaces J.J. Putz on the roster and has minor league closing experience. But he merely will fill a middle-relief role with the Mariners after posting a 5.02 ERA and 11/13 K/BB ratio in 14.1 innings at Triple-A.

Esteban Loaiza - RP, Chicago White Sox
Jun. 13, 11:05 a.m.The White Sox's official site reports that the team is expected to release Esteban Loaiza prior to Friday's game. Fantasy Source spin: The team had been unhappy with his conditioning, and wasn't pleased that he could reach only the low 80s on the radar gun. The 10-day experiment of having Loaiza pitch in mop-up situations didn't hurt, but the Sox clearly feel he no longer has his best stuff. Adam Russell likely will be called up to take his place.Source: WhiteSox.mlb.com

Joba Chamberlain - RP, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 10:27 a.m.Joba Chamberlain will be allowed to throw around 95 pitches in his start on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: Assuming he lasts that long, the outing effectively will end his pitch count. Chamberlain says his body has been responding well to getting stretched out, and that his legs are "getting there."Source: Newsday

Joel Zumaya - RP, Detroit Tigers
Jun. 13, 9:47 a.m.Joel Zumaya (shoulder) said Thursday that he reached 100 mph on the radar gun in a recent outing. Fantasy Source spin: Good news considering he's coming off reconstructive shoulder surgery. Zumaya is reportedly 25-30 pounds lighter after undergoing his rehab regimen, and also admitted that he considered retiring after suffering his injury. The Tigers hope to have him back on June 20.Source: Detroit Free Press

Jake Westbrook - SP, Cleveland Indians
Jun. 13, 9:22 a.m.Jake Westbrook had successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday in Los Angeles. He was transferred to the 60-dat DL on Friday. Fantasy Source spin: He'll fly to Cleveland today and begin physical therapy for what should be a 10-14 month rehab.Source: Akron Beacon Journal

Esteban Loaiza - RP, Chicago White Sox
Jun. 13, 9:18 a.m.The White Sox were disappointed to realize that Esteban Loaiza hadn't been working out or throwing before they signed him on on June 4. Fantasy Source spin: In all fairness, it probably doesn't take a ton of work to maintain his low-80s fastball. He's issued just one run in three innings of work for the White Sox, but the team is clearly not satisfied with his stuff. "We would like to see more, see more fastball. We know he has pitchability. He's going to have some time to show us, but we have our work cut out for us," pitching coach Don Cooper said.Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Andy Pettitte - SP, New York Yankees
Jun. 13, 12:54 a.m.Andy Pettitte threw eight innings and allowed one run Thursday in a win over the A's. Fantasy Source spin: Pettitte followed up one of the worst outings of his career (10 ER in 6 2/3 IP versus Kansas City) with his best performance since April 20. Still, he is sporting a 4.45 ERA despite a particularly easy schedule. Not one of his 14 starts to date has come against a team in the top 10 in the majors in runs scored.Next start: 6/18: SD
