Jul 13 2008 - DH David Ortiz is moving closer to a return to the Red Sox lineup. Big Papi is scheduled to embark on a six-game rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) and Double-A Portland (ME.) after the All-Star break. If Ortiz's troublesome left wrist passes through the minor league action without any setbacks, the designated hitter should be cleared to return to the Sox fold against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on July 25. "I feel great. I've had so many surgeries already. I don't want no more. It's good to know that I'm going to be able to play without surgery," said Ortiz.

Jul 13 2008 - B Kevin Youkilis left Sunday afternoon's game in the fifth inning with a left triceps contusion after getting hit in the arm with a pitch. The injury isn't expected to be serious and X-Rays taken at the park were negative, so Youkilis' status as the starting first baseman for the AL All-Star team shouldn't be affected. SS Jed Lowrie entered the game as an injury replacement for Youkilis and played in the remainder of Sunday afternoon's game. "He's fine," said Sox Manager Terry Francona. "He just got hit in the funny bone."

Jul 14 2008 - RHP Rafael Soriano (right elbow tendinitis) began a rehab assignment July 12 with the Braves' Dominican Summer League's team in San Francisco de Macoris. Soriano threw nine pitches and had one strikeout in his one-inning appearance.
Jul 14 2008 - LF Alfonso Soriano probably won't come off the DL until July 24, when the Cubs return from a six-game road trip after the All-Star break. Soriano broke a bone in his left hand June 11. The Cubs had hoped he could return right after the break, but the hand has felt "weak," and Soriano may do a minor-league rehab stint.
Spin: He could be back in 1 week.

Jerry Hairston Jr.
Day-To-Day
July 16 2008 Hairston was diagnosed with a mild strain in his right hamstring after undergoing an MRI on Monday, the Sporting News reports.

Jul 14 2008 - RF Ryan Church said he expects to play sooner rather than later after an exam in the Cleveland Clinic determined his headaches were migraines rather than symptoms from his two concussions. Endy Chavez and Fernando Tatis have played in right with Church on the disabled list. Church hopes to be ready to play when he's eligible to come off the disabled list, July 21. "He'll get some at-bats before he rejoins us," manager Jerry Manuel said. "Every day there's a period of evaluation."

Player Watch On the mend: Francisco Liriano; Assistant general manager Rob Antony said Wednesday that the Twins will discuss the possibility of pitching Liriano out of the bullpen.
