Big Papi day-to-day with sprained wrist
David Ortiz - DH - BOS - Jun. 1 - 3:46 a.m. ET
X-rays were negative on David Ortiz's left wrist, and the Red Sox are calling him day-to-day with a sprain."I feel that pop right away when I swung. … I think I maybe sprained something right there and it’s a little sore. Hopefully, it’ll go away soon," said Ortiz, who added that he doesn't expect to play Sunday.
Ramirez hits 500th homer in win over Orioles
Manny Ramirez - OF - BOS - May. 31 - 11:25 p.m. ET
Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career homer off Chad Bradford in Boston's 6-3 win in Baltimore on Saturday. But he's still 16 doubles away from 500. Ramirez became the 24th player in major league history to get to 500 homers. That he did it off Bradford was a true surprise. Bradford hadn't allowed a homer to a right-handed hitter since May 14, 2006. The Red Sox also got back-to-back homers from Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz in tonight's victory. Ramirez's homer broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning.
Webb's MLB-high 10th win a shutout
Brandon Webb - S - ARZ - May. 31 - 11:02 p.m. ET
Brandon Webb tossed his eighth career shutout Saturday against the Nationals.Webb allowed six hits, walked none and struck out eight in a dominant outing. He had lost two starts in a row, but this still makes him 2008's first 10-game winner. He's fourth in the National League with a 2.69 ERA.
Bruce's first homer a walkoff versus Braves
Jay Bruce - OF - CIN - May. 31 - 7:59 p.m. ET
Jay Bruce's first career homer was a walkoff shot off Manny Acosta in the top of the 10th to give the Reds an 8-7 win over the Braves on Saturday.Bruce had two singles, a walk and two runs scored earlier in the contest. He's struck out just once and walked five times as a major leaguer after posting a K/BB ratio of nearly 4:1 in Triple-A. Some will say it just goes to show how stupid it was of the Reds to wait so long to call it up. Bruce, though, isn't yet a finished product, and he's not going to keep dominating major league pitching as a 21-year-old. The Reds handled him appropriately.
Hanley iffy for Saturday with hand injury
Hanley Ramirez - SS - FLA - May. 31 - 12:45 a.m. ET
Hanley Ramirez appears to be questionable for Saturday after leaving Friday's game with a thumb contusion."I can’t squeeze my thumb right now," Ramirez said. "We’ll see how it feels tomorrow." Alfredo Amezaga would start if Ramirez can't.
Angels place Figgins on DL, activate Kendrick
Chone Figgins - 3B - ANA - May. 30 - 9:36 p.m. ET
Angels placed third baseman Chone Figgins on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 22, with irritation in his right hamstring. The Angels kept maintaining that it was more general soreness than continued problems with the same hamstring, but it seems it was always more serious than they let on. Of course, if they knew it was this bad, they wouldn't have waited an extra week to put him on the DL. They'll go with Robb Quinlan and Brandon Wood at third until Figgins returns.
Indians place Hafner on 15-day disabled list
Travis Hafner - DH - CLE - May. 30 - 7:48 p.m. ET
Indians placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with a right shoulder strain.Hafner will aim to return as soon as his 15 days are up. Michael Aubrey, Andy Marte and Shin-Soo Choo will pick up his at-bats. Aubrey is the best option of the group in AL-only leagues.
Rangers' Blalock undergoes wrist surgery
Hank Blalock - 3B - TEX - May. 30 - 5:43 p.m. ET
Hank Blalock underwent surgery to relieve irritation in his right wrist due to carpal tunnel syndrome and is expected to miss another month.Obviously, the cortisone shot didn't work as hoped. The Rangers will go with Chris Shelton and Frank Catalanotto at first base to begin June. They could look for outside options as well. It's highly unlikely that they'll turn to top prospect Chris Davis. Source: Dallas Morning News
Cubs overcome 9-1 deficit, beat Rockies 10-9
Jim Edmonds - OF - CHC - May. 30 - 5:36 p.m. ET
Jim Edmonds had a solo homer in the sixth and a three-run double in the seventh as the Cubs overcame a 9-1 deficit to beat the Rockies 10-9 on Friday.Aaron Cook seemed like the perfect choice to maintain a big lead for the Rockies with the wind blowing out at Wrigley, but he gave up three homers between the sixth and seventh innings. Kosuke Fukudome started the outburst with his two-run homer, and Mark DeRosa finished it with a go-ahead two-run blast off Manny Corpas after Cook was pulled in the seventh. Edmonds might still be looking as washed up as ever if not for the strong breeze out to center, but since he did make a major contribution in what will surely go down as one of the Cubs' biggest wins of the year, he's likely bought himself a couple of more weeks.
A's call up Carlos Gonzalez, DL Sweeneys
Carlos Gonzalez - OF - OAK - May. 30 - 5:13 p.m. ET
The A's have reportedly called up both Carlos Gonzalez and Travis Buck and placed Mike Sweeney (knee), Ryan Sweeney (foot) and Joey Devine (forearm) all on the DL.Also up are relievers Kiko Calero and Brad Ziegler, with Lenny DiNardo getting designated for assignment. The A's will put both Gonzalez and Buck into the outfield mix and likely go with Jack Cust as their primary DH until Frank Thomas returns. Both Gonzalez and Buck should have value in AL-only leagues. Gonzalez is an outstanding long-term prospect, of course, but Buck is the better bet for now. Source: San Francisco Chronicle
